A picture of Ghanaians leaving Nigeria at the border to enter Benin as part of their journey back to Ghana on 17th January 1983.
Before this, in 1982, Nigerian politicians in their manifestos in preparation for the 1983 general elections blamed African migrants, especially Ghanaians, for the flailing economy. They said Ghanaians had taken all the jobs and brought crime to Nigeria and, if elected, they would chase them out, they promised.
PS: Mind you, in November 1969, Kofi Busia's government deported a lot of African migrants from Ghana including Nigerians. However, Nigerians didn't deport Ghanaians in 1983 in retaliation to Busia's 1969 mass deportation.
Nigeria's president Shehu Shagari deported Ghanaians because of the dip in oil prices in 1982 which wiped out almost 90% of the country's foreign reserves causing severe economic hardships and loss of jobs. Prices of foods skyrocketed and others.
If not for that, there wouldn't have been any Ghana MUST GO!
